Jardine parrots (Poicephalus gulielmi) are African companion birds. For apartment dwellers they are a perfect choice, as their size and personality do not call for big house or 24*7 attention. But, like other birds, they can have their mood swings and stress period, which you need to handle sensibly.

As pets
Housing
Install a cage with a diameter of 24X22X52 inches so that the parrot can climb and move effortlessly. A few perches are also required inside the cage for your pet’s nail grooming. There should be some foraging toys along with a play pen. The material of the cage necessarily needs to be made of durable things as the bird has strong beaks.
Temperature
Although they can endure a range of 40°F-90°F, still try to keep the lowest temperature of your room at 65°F while the highest might be around 80°F.
Temperaments
Jardine parrots are jolly birds that find happiness in playing with toys and interacting with humans. During their growing years, they might become hostile, but they won’t stop loving their owners. So, if you see your bird has become nippy or grumpy, try to bestow it with your attention and love. Most of the time these parrots are cuddly and do something entertaining.
Feeding
Apart from a pelleted diet, provide vegetables and fruits in fresh condition to your pet. To make the bird’s fast-growing beak in control, give it almond.
Care
Keeping everything (inside the cage) clean is your duty as it can ensure a healthy bird. From its food bowl to toys, wash it every day and change after a certain point. Nail clipping is not necessary if you install some grooming perch inside the cage.
Health problems
Psittacosis or parrot fever, giardia, bacterial infection, polyomavirus, and Pacheco’s Disease are common in these parrots.
Price
These birds costs from $500-$1500.
Interesting Facts
- Although there are three subspecies of the bird, there could be a fourth one.
